Dressage Arena

A dressage arena surface needs to work hard. It needs to be durable, consistent and kind to your horses, session after session, year after year. Get it wrong and your horse will tell you. Shortened strides, reluctance to engage, inconsistent responses to the aids, more often than not, the surface is a factor.

At Combi-Ride, we understand what dressage demands from a surface. We have completed a wide range of dressage arena projects across the UK, working with private riders, competition yards and commercial clients. Our customers come back to us because we take the time to get it right from the start.

We guarantee the best service from the very first conversation through to the completion of your project. Once your arena is installed, we do not disappear. We are available to provide ongoing maintenance support and guidance, and we can offer an all-in-one surface manager to keep your surface performing exactly as it should for years to come.

Long Dressage Arena

A long dressage arena measures 20m x 60m as standard. Riding one for the first time can feel daunting, for horse and rider alike. The extra space demands more from both of you. But rather than seeing that as pressure, think of it as an opportunity. More room to develop rhythm. More time to prepare movements. More space to build genuine strength, suppleness and confidence in your horse.

Dressage demands strength, balance and focus from both horse and rider. A long arena gives you the environment to develop all three properly, and the surface underneath plays a bigger role in that than most people realise. Inconsistent footing means your horse is constantly adjusting rather than working correctly. The right surface removes that variable entirely.

We have the specialist tools, equipment and experience to install long dressage arena surfaces to the highest standard. Every project is managed carefully from groundwork through to the final layer.

Indoor Dressage Arena

Combi-Ride has extensive experience installing indoor dressage arena surfaces for both commercial and private clients across the UK. Every project is different from the building, the groundwork, the discipline, the horses. We take all of it into account before we recommend anything.

Whether you are starting from scratch or converting an existing surface, we can support you at every stage of the process. Our testimonials reflect the care we put into every installation, and our maintenance support means you are never left to figure things out on your own once the work is done.

We install indoor surfaces in all standard sizes including 20×40 and 20×60. Indoor arenas offer year-round usability without weather interruption – a significant advantage for riders training seriously or building towards competition. Moisture management is the key consideration with indoor surfaces. Without natural rainfall, surfaces can dry out and lose cohesion unless properly managed. We will advise on the right surface and routine for your specific setup.

FAQs

  • What surface is used for a dressage arena?

Silica sand combined with Dual Stabiliser Fibre is the most widely used surface for dressage arenas. Silica sand is preferred for its stability and consistency and when paired with fibre it creates a surface that provides the cushioning and response a dressage horse needs to move correctly and comfortably.

  • What is the best surface for a full-size dressage arena?

For a full-size dressage arena, silica sand and Dual Stabiliser Fibre is the go-to combination. The fibre provides response and stability underfoot while the sand delivers cushioning that helps absorb impact and reduce strain on your horse’s tendons and ligaments. Rubber chippings can also be added as a useful frost insulator during winter months and unlike wood fibre, rubber won’t rot down over time.

  • What size dressage arena do I need?

The standard small arena is 20m x 40m, used for preliminary and novice level tests. The standard long arena is 20m x 60m, used from medium level upwards. Which is right for you depends on the level you are training at, the number of horses using the arena and the space you have available. If you are unsure, we will talk it through during your site survey and give you a clear recommendation based on your specific situation.

  • How deep should the surface be in a dressage arena?

For dressage, a surface depth of around 5 inches (125mm) of silica sand with a stabiliser additive is generally recommended. Getting the depth right is important. Too deep and it places unnecessary strain on tendons, too shallow and you lose the cushioning and response the horse needs. We’ll advise on the correct depth for your specific surface and discipline during consultation.

  • How often does a dressage arena need to be maintained?

Regular harrowing is essential to keep the surface consistent and prevent compaction. For most private yards, harrowing every once a day is a good rule of thumb, depending on weather conditions and how frequently the arena is ridden. We provide full maintenance guidance with every installation.

  • Can I rejuvenate my existing dressage arena instead of replacing it?

In many cases, yes. If your sub-base is still structurally sound, targeted surface treatments and additives can make a significant difference to ride quality without the cost of a full rebuild. Whether you need additional fibre, a surface top-up or help with drainage, get in touch with our team and we’ll recommend the most practical and cost-effective solution for your arena.
