FAQs

  • Does it matter what type of sand I use in my horse arena or is building sand fine?

It matters enormously what type of sand you use in your arena and this is one of the most common and costly mistakes arena owners make. Equestrian-grade silica sand is specifically shaped to hold moisture while draining freely, and to cushion hoof impact while retaining it. Building sand simply doesn’t behave the same way underfoot.

  • How do I know which equestrian sand is right for my arena and discipline?

The right sand depends on your discipline, usage level, drainage setup and whether you’ll be adding stabiliser fibre. Combi-Ride works with the UK’s most trusted equestrian sand producers and has over 20 years’ experience matching the right material to the right arena.

Call us for honest, expert advice and read Choosing the Right Surface for Your Horse’s Discipline for a starting point.

  • My horse keeps slipping on my arena surface, could the sand be wrong?

Slipping is often linked to sand that is too round or too fine, which prevents the surface gripping and holding hoof impact. Correctly graded equestrian silica sand is angular in shape, meaning particles interlock under pressure to create a secure, stable footing. If slipping is a problem, the sand specification and any lack of stabiliser fibre are the first things to investigate.

Read The Interaction Between the Hoof and the Surface for a detailed explanation of how surface grip works.

  • How does sand quality affect my horse's health and performance over time?

Poor-quality or incorrectly graded sand creates surfaces that are either too hard, too loose or too unpredictable, all of which increase physical strain on your horse. Over time, training on a poor surface contributes to fatigue, joint stress and a higher risk of soft tissue injury.

Read Footing Fatigue: How Tiredness Changes a Horse’s Behaviour and Training Quality and Prioritising Horse Health from Hoof to Heart.

  • My arena drains badly after rain – could the sand be part of the problem?

Yes. Sand that isn’t the correct grade for equestrian use often lacks the particle size and shape needed to allow water to pass through efficiently, leading to saturation and surface failure. Equestrian-grade silica sand from approved quarries is specifically selected for drainage performance. If drainage problems are severe, the sub-base beneath may also need attention.
